COMMENTS ON WATER CHARGES & USAGE BY MAYORAL CANDIDATE FRASER COAST QLD AUSTRALIA, JIM Mac KELLAR

Media Release

Saving Water

Water is a very valuable resource, arguably our most valuable as all life depends on it. Because of this people should be given every incentive to use less water.

At the moment the bulk of all our water and sewerage charges, on the Fraser Coast, are made up of the access charge for water plus a flat charge for sewerage, regardless of usage. Charges for actual water used make up less than 20% of the average bill.

This means that, even if a household can reduce their water usage by half they will reduce their water and sewerage charges by less than $25 each quarter. Where is the incentive?

In the forth coming budget Council can take steps to remedy this situation. It is quite a simple process to move to a pricing structure that would see over 60% of charges calculated on the actual water usage of each premises.

This would achieve two major beneficial outcomes. Firstly it would remove the present situation where frugal users are subsidising those who are less careful with water. And, it would provide a real monetary incentive to our residents to use less of our most valuable resource.

This is one opportunity for our Councillors to prove that they are not just paying lip service to their policies of sustainability but really believe in taking action that will bring us benefits in the future. Will they step up or is it all too hard?
